Our Promise: Why You Want & Need What We Have
We promise, we design, and create 100% artisan quality sleeping masks and travel accessories inspired by your need for something as fun as it is functional. Everything is made with love and attention to detail by hand using thread, needle, and usually on our vintage Pfaff sewing machine. None of the items you find in our shop are mass produced in a factory overseas.

No other maker of sleep masks and travel accessories follows our approach. Ours is the only gift-able brand of artisan quality sleep masks that not only help you sleep better by blocking out light, but also enchant you because we lovingly embroider and applique the things you find fun, quirky or cute directly onto the canvas of each sleep mask. The result is a sleep mask that brings out the kid in you and matches your distinct style and personality. Why do we go to such lengths to merge a sleep mask that is as fun as it is functional? We believe sleep masks should help you sleep, not put you to sleep.

Who We are

We're like you: active, busy, and needing rest. You want high-quality, unique products that are fun and cute and functional. There's no reason these passions can't be combined. Fun, functional and unique doesn't have to be expensive, yet it often is.
Le Neko Noir was created by Annie Andre. Annie discovered that sleeping masks were a simple, affordable, and natural way to help you sleep. They're main purpose is to block out light so you can concentrate on sleeping. She went out in search of a soft, comfortable and fun sleeping mask to match her personality and personal style that would not only help her sleep better at night, but also give her the freedom to take catnaps on lazy afternoons and help her forget her motion-sickness and concentrate on sleeping while traveling on a plane trip, in a car or on a metro. She quickly became frustrated and disenchanted by the lack of quality sleep masks that were well made, comfortable and fun to wear. Many were comfortable but boring, others were cute but were shoddily made and fell apart. Others were too expensive for what they were. And almost all of the sleeping masks were mass produced in some factory over seas. In the end, Annie decided to make her own sleeping mask that was as much fun to look at as they were functional and fun to wear. One that would match her personal style like a pair of quirky pajamas. Her first sleeping mask was the a black cat sleeping mask (after all cats love to take naps). She hand embroidered and appliqued two little x's to signify the kitty was dead tired. It worked like a charm. Best of all, to counter her motion sickness, she carries one with her and slips one on whenever she feels the slightest bit of motion sickness occurring. She slept like a baby or dead kitty"

A Business Is Born Of Frustration

After getting laid off in 2007, Annie combined her business experience with her shopping frustration and founded Le Neko Noir. She originally thought she would sell an eclectic collection of handmade bags and baubles. However, the masks were a huge hit in her shop and now she mainly focuses on sleep masks and travel centric accessories. Her mission is to make sleeping and traveling fun, but not at the expense of quality. All the masks at Le Neko Noir are 100% designed and hand-made by Annie. She embroiders charming motifs, inspired by cute woodland forest animals, deadly ninjas, cats, pop culture, and life. To date her best seller is her original creation, the dead kitty sleeping mask.

Where

Annie currently has a traveling studio. She used to make everything from her home in Belmont California, in a room converted into a studio. Since August, 2010, she and her family have temporarily relocated to Montreal to be near family. Her small sewing room is always crammed with bolts of fabric, books, sewing machines, and lot's of thread and buttons. Her next studio location may be somewhere in New Hampshire or Vermont. Time will tell.

What does Le Neko Noir Mean?

Maneki Neko Tournee du chat noir

Le Neko Noir, pronounced "luh necko nwohr" is similar to a portmanteau: combining two or more words and their meanings into a new word. In this case, two languages are blended. "Neko" is Japanese for cat and "Le Noir" is French for "the black". Le Neko Noir means the black cat.
Why cats? Why French and Japanese? Annie lived in Tokyo, Japan for three years where the quirky, off beat kawaii street style had a profound effect on her taste. Likewise, French culture, especially French children's motifs, also influences her designs. Her family is Francophone, French Canadians. Cat themes are common to both cultures and proved a good fit to mix the two.
